They're now talking about electrifying the Melbourne-Geelong railway, with a view to integrating Geelong into the Melbourne suburban railway network. Sounds like a good idea (something like what they have in NSW, with electric commuter trains running all the way to Newcastle and Wollongong, would be good.)

When the Bad Shit Went Down in New York, a lot of people were overwhelmed by a desperate need to be close to another human being. This has manifested itself in everything from dating services doing a roaring trade to people having spontaneous sex with strangers, as if in a desperate, last-ditch life-affirming gesture. And some are saying that this phenomenon could lead to a new baby boom (as happened during World War 2). (via Techdirt)

Scare meme of the day: Apparently, organic chickens are three times as likely to contain food-poisoning bacteria as the non-organic variety. No idea whether this is as dangerous as the brain-liquefying E.coli bacterium mentioned in Fast Food Nation, apparently prevalent in mass-produced beef.

News on The Cure's upcoming best-of. The track listing looks good (not too many recent songs, which is just as well), and the acoustic bonus CD could be good too. The fact that there'll be a DVD is also promising, except that it's not likely to have a video of Charlotte Sometimes (the one that was filmed in an abandoned mental hospital).

Amusing link of the day: KOMPRESSOR. Over-the-top German industrial music, or something like that. It looks like someone was inspired by Harmon Leon's Dieter Lietershvantz persona, or perhaps the German nihilists in The Big Lebowski, or something. (I was going to blog this earlier today, though Graham had the same idea as well.)
